LIBRARY BEHAVIOR GUIDELINES

Library patron brings small child / children into the library

    Appropriation action:

  •     If the patron is returning a book, or performing another quick transaction, no action is needed.
  •     If the patron is settling down for a prolonged library session, remind him/her of the College’s policy.

    Sample conversation:

“Just to let you know, college policy doesn’t permit children to accompany adults to the library for prolonged visits,”

    College policy:

Child Safety Procedures, 2008-2009 Student Handbook, p 27:

For the safety of children and to maintain an academic environment, children are not permitted in any instructional areas, to include classrooms, laboratories and library, and children are not to be left unattended in any area of the College.  Parents will be asked to accompany their children off campus under these circumstances.

Unaccompanied child / children in the library

    Appropriate action:

  •     Ask the child who they are here with, and where that person is
  •     If adult is in class / not present, contact security desk at x1308

Cell phone conversations

Many students are aware of the library's "no cell phone conversations" policy, and if their phone rings, they will tell the caller to hold on while they leave the library to take the call.  Since these students are aware of the policy, no reminder is needed.  Other students still need reminders, and here are examples of such reminders.

    Appropriate action:

  •     If it is a short, quiet conversation, approach the student after their conversation, gently remind them about our policy.
    • For example, "I just wanted to let you know that the library is a no-cell-phone zone, so next time you'll need to take your call outside."
  •     If it is a lengthy, loud conversation, or repeated conversations, approach the student while they're on the phone, and tell them our policy.
    • For example, "Excuse me.  Your conversation is distracting others who are trying to work.  Please take your conversation outside of the library."
  •     If a student is talking on their cell phone in a quiet or silent zone, approach the student and remind him/her about our policy.
    • For example,  "Excuse me, this is a quiet zone.  You'll need to take you conversation outside the library."
