Scheduling

Part-time librarian appointments are for the academic year, which runs September 1 - August 31, and are for a specific number of hours. For example, if you are appointed to work 700 hours, you will be scheduled to work 700 hours between September 1 and August 31.

At the end of July, the Public Services Librarian will distribute a survey to part-time librarians, to collect information about availability.  The schedule for the next academic year is based on part-time librarians' availability.  Each part-time librarian is given a total amount of hours for the next year.  This includes a set number of hours to work when classes are in session, and a number of hours to work during intersession.

Schedules when classes are in session (fall semester, spring semester, summer session) are typically fairly regular.

The intersession schedule (winter break, spring break, summer intersession) is created cooperatively, by the part-time librarians.  Part-time librarian hours are typically reduced during intersessions.

I post all schedules: reference desk schedules, virtual reference schedule, instruction schedule and each librarian's work schedule on the Begley Reference Blog.  It is a good idea to check the blog at the beginning of your work shift, to see if any changes have been made.  Also, I ask each librarian to post a monthly update to the reference blog, to communicate with everyone else what projects have been completed or are underway, and other notable activities that have been undertaken.

For what holidays does the college close?

A link to the College calender is posted here.

The college closes for:

  • Labor day
  • Thanksgiving break (Thursday, Friday, Saturday)
  • Christmas day
  • New Year's day
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. day
  • Memorial day
  • Independence day

The college is closed on Sundays.

The college is closed on Saturdays during intersessions and summer session.

During the summer of 2011, the library will close at 1:00 on Fridays in July and August.

Snow days

If you hear an announcement (on the news, radio or online) that classes at SCCC have been canceled, unless the announcement ALSO says that the college is closed and staff do not have to report, then the library is open and staff are expected to report for work.  If the college is closed, you will receive a phone call from a member of the library staff.  If you are in doubt, call the library office at 381-1240.

Do I indicate my lunch break on my timesheet?

You have two options:

  1. You can take a working lunch, and eat lunch while you continue working.  In this case, since you are not taking a true lunch "break," you do not indicate a lunch break on your timesheet.  If you are the only librarian here during the evening, you do not need to indicate your dinner break on your timesheet, since you are still "on call" during your break.
  2. If you choose to take a break during lunch, then you need to indicate this break on your timesheet.

How long a lunch break may I take?

You may take a working lunch (with no break,) or up to an hour lunch break.  Since the length of your lunch break affects your timesheet, please let me know how long a lunch you intend to take on a regular basis.

Are there any tuition benefits at SCCC?

At this time, there are no tuition benefits for part-time employees at SCCC.

What benefits come with this position?

For every 80 hours you work, you accrue 4 hours of paid personal time.  Your personal time is deducted from your total hours.  So, if you are assigned to work 160 hours, you will actually work 152 hours, and earn 8 paid personal hours.

I know in advance that I'll need to miss a day/evening - - what should I do?

If you need to be out on a day/evening you are normally scheduled to work, arrange a swap with another part-time librarian.  After you've made the trade, make the change to Google Calendar.

If I cover someone else's hours, does that come out of my total hours, or their total hours?

It will come out of your total hours.

However, since librarians are paid on a salaried basis, you are paid the same each week regardless of how many hours you worked during that week.  So if, for example, you work fewer hours during the summer, you will still be paid at the same rate as the rest of the year.

I've received a jury duty summons.  Am I paid while attending jury duty?

Yes.  You are paid during jury duty.

I want to attend a workshop or conference.  Is there any funding for that?

For training or programs that you are required to attend for your job, full reimbursement is assured.

See Lynne for information about funding for elective conferences and workshops.

Am I paid for attending conferences or workshops?

If you are required to attend for your job, you will be paid.

Attendance at conferences and workshops of your choosing may count as paid hours, with Lynne's approval.

Windows login &  U  drive

After you have completed your paperwork and submitted it to Human Resources, you will be issued a Windows account.  With this account, you can log in to any of the networked computers on campus.  You need to be logged in to access printers, to clear the print queue at the reference desk, and to access the U drive and J drive.

When you access the U drive, you will see a folder with your username on it.  This is your private folder.  This folder is a good place to save personal files, such as your timesheets.  Items saved to the U drive may be accessed in multiple locations - - in the reference office, at the reference desk, etc.

J drive

You can also save files to the J drive, in J:\shares\Library\Reference.  This is a shared folder for all librarians.  If you are working on something such as a resource guide that you'd like other librarians to be able to access, save it to this folder.

You will find other files, such as lesson plans and worksheets for instruction sessions; statistics; brochures and more in this folder.

E-mail

Microsoft Outlook Exchange is the campus e-mail service.  After you have filled out your paperwork and submitted it to Human Resources, you will be issued an SCCC computer network use name and password.  Once you have your SCCC user name and password, you can access your Outlook Exchange e-mail account.  Since the reference department is made up almost exclusively of part time librarians, we rely heavily on e-mail for communication.  Please remember to check your e-mail routinely!!
